DESCRIPTION

Camp Description:

Actors will explore a musical theatre intensive each morning led by Alexander Watson, Associate Artistic Director of Visionbox Studio. Enjoy an introduction to acting through music, music analysis and how it relates to character, as well as musical theatre styles, history, and audition preparation. Each class will begin group warmups focusing on the voice and body, as well as skills-based games and exercises to help facilitate an open environment where actors can feel vulnerable, liberated, and empowered. The camp will cover group discussions on creating characters and unlocking the full potential of music and text each actor is assigned. Actors will get the opportunity to work on solos and group pieces, culminating in a final showcase on the last day for family and friends. Music will be drawn from a wide range of shows such as SIX, Cabaret, Into The Woods, and more!

Afternoons will be for exploring a scene study intensive led by Jennifer McCray Rincon, Artistic Director of Visionbox Studio. This scene study camp centers around the Actor’s Five Questions; a text-based technique for creating characters through understanding the spine of the play, the super-objective and objectives of a character, and actions. Students will explore complex theatre literature such as Chekhov, Ibsen, Strindberg, and American playwrights such as Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, and Lillian Hellman. This camp will include lectures on the Five Questions and tablework on assigned plays. Each student will be cast in 1-2 scenes and be assigned 1 monologue. On the last day, actors will perform in a final showcase for family and friends.

Actors will have the opportunity to ‘Zoom-In’ over lunch with guest artists from all areas of professional theatre including acting, directing, writing, design, and stage management. Special Guest artists include NY/LA Actor Bill Pullman, Broadway actor Bill Youmans, Scenic & Projection Designer Phillip Baldwin, TV Wig and Makeup Designer Amelia Bay-Brown, and Broadway Actor Dave Thomas Bay-Brown.

This camp will prepare actors for application and admission to colleges, conservatories, and professional work. Each actor will leave with one audition piece to use going forward for auditions at high school, college, as well as community and professional theatres.
