Visionbox Studio Theatre PLAYCLUB!
(a creative discussion for non-actors - hosted on Zoom)
Date: Thursday, September 24th, 7-8:30 p.m.
Cost: $25 per person.
PLAYCLUB is Visionbox’s version of book club. We distribute the script in advance and then convene by zoom to study and discuss it. Founding Artistic Director Jennifer McCray Rincon opens with remarks about both the play and the playwright. We then invite group discussion, after which Visionbox actors perform a scene from the play. We discuss that scene, after which Ms. Rincon re-directs the scene to demonstrate an alternative approach to the same text. We have been told over and over that watching actors rework scenes like this is the most intriguing part of our work. It is also an excellent way to gain appreciation for the literature and language of theatre.
Our play for September 24th is “True West”, the 1980 play by American playwright Sam Shepard.
TRUE WEST is the story of two brothers locked in a rivalry not over the land of the "True West" but over a kind of mythic land that defines their identities. Sam Shepard was one of our most prolific American playwrights, who explored the opposition between Pop American Culture and the Old West. This play has been performed by countless extraordinary actors, perhaps most notably by Gary Sinese and John Malkovich in 1984.
What the public is saying
"As a non-actor myself, I have always been intrigued as to the process of acting/actors. The ability to change and adapt to a variety of roles and become a believable representation of someone else entirely. This “PlayClub” was a wonderful eye-opener for me! I have a new passion and fascination for the true art of the Theatre, the work that is involved, and the passions of actors, producers, and all story-tellers; in the production of these very necessary stories for out times. I would recommend this evening to anybody who wants a glimpse of the inside processes!! Thank you, Jennifer, and the Visionbox crew for a most enjoyable evening! See you next time!"

Contemporary Scene Study
This class explored some of the most important plays and playwrights of the last 10 years. Senes were selected from texts written by Lynn Nottage, Lucas Hnath, John Patrick Shanley, Paula Vogel, Annie Baker, Tracy Letts, Suzan Lori Parks, Stephen Karam and more.
As always the Actors ‘Five Questions was studied in the context of these great contemporary works and each actor worked on at least two
scenes in depth with a partner. In this complex time Visionbox also is studying not only technique, but also how contemporary writing reflects our contemporary concerns and society as a whole.
